Contrasting Views of GMA7 and ABS-CBN on Following the Fair Elections Act

Noynoy-Aquino-Kris-AquinoThe issue of Comelec telling celebrities to stop takes a leave of absence from their programs and shows while endorsing and campaigning for candidates of the May 2010 elections or simply not mingle on this bold political exercise is heating up.  While GMA7 has already advised its talents to observed the Fair Elections Act and strictly implements to its talents and shows to be always fair and partial to all candidates, ABS-CBN is taking the opposite road.

ABS-CBN through its Corporate Communications Head Bong Osorio said that its stars are free to endorse any candidates but are strictly prohibited from using their shows on furthering a politician’s political agenda.  And its talents are not asked to go on leave as celebrities have the same right of freedom of expression as with the average Filipino.

Osoria further stressed,

Kung anuman ang kanilang gawin – kumanta sumayaw o tumugtog sa isang political gathering o rally – sa kanila na ‘yan. Personal decision kasi yan, hindi naman natin mapagbawalan ‘yan as an organization,” He added: “’Yong guidelines sa paglabas kunwari sa mga rally, pinapaubaya na sa individual artist kasi outside of their time na sa programa nila.

In this regard, it is ABS-CBN’s policy that its talents may not use any program to endorse or promote any candidate. This policy is strictly enforced by the network.

The network also pointed that a law provision stating that media personalities should either resign or go on leave applies only to employees.

Talents are not employees of the network and, therefore, the said provision does not apply to them.

Unfortunately, we have already seen the obvious that for its main man on the noontime slot Willie Revillame, he is not observing this said policy of not using the show to further the candidacy of any political candidate.  Any average Pinoy knows that “Wowowee” is being used as a political vehicle of Manny Villar with Willie Revillame on the driver seat of this noontime media blitz.

While GMA7 automatically adheres to the law in the spirit of fairness and impartiality to level the playing field to all candidates, ABS-CBN is countering this as their biggest stars are into active participation on the political campaigns of many politicians trying to resort on saying that the law is not clear and ambiguous.

You can see the big difference there.  Talking about impartiality, fairness, balanced news and vested interest:  things that have been questioned with ABS-CBN being under management and ownership of the Lopezes.

What is your reaction to the GMA7’s action on immediately asking its talents to take a leave of absence when endorsing and campaigning for politicians?  And the ABS-CBN’s action of not following the memorandum of the Comelec?  Share your comments.

Affected celebrities will suffer as how their managements will decide on the said Fair Election Act because it will definitely affects their work. As Filipinos they are entitled to express their support to any candidate. I guess they are matured enough not to use their programs to campaign for anybody because that is not a political venue and it has its own objective.

  2. Ang tanong diyan sa GMA7 eh kung maipapatupad ba nila un? Eh big stars nila gaya ni Dingdong ang mawawala, papayag naman kaya sila dun.

elmot, it seems that ur blog is counter-intuitively one sided, i hope u would be fair in any commentaries you are rendering. i am a kapuso, that’s why i can sense partiality in any of your notions.

Referring to the issue, i dont agree that actors or actresses should involve the campaign of their chosen politician in an ordinary Tv show, because it ushers Partiality or bias not only to the TV program but also to the network. they are old enough to know what they are doing, they are influencing people at the expense of their credintial advantages. as long as I observed, Kris aquino and willie revillame tends to be doing this thing more often…no offense meant but i think its true.
