Franco Speaks Up On His Oscar Gig

Months after the stony night, the Ghost of the 83 Academy Awards night still haunts James Franco. To this day, speculations are still high on his odd behavior that night. Finally, on an one-on-one intimate interview with Playboy magazine, Franco spills it all out.

The 33-year-old actor came clean and told Playboy that he was none too impressed with how he came across on stage. The 127 Hours star also admitted that he was unsure of himself at first when asked to co-host the show. “I mean, what are the host’s responsibilities?” You have an opening monologue, maybe a bit or two in the middle of the show, and then the rest is just reading names… ” said the multi-talented artist.

He said it was the producers reassurance that made him sign up for the role. “They told me they knew I wasn’t Chris Rock and that they had designed the show around me,” said Franco.

So What went wrong?

Franco blames the “lack of good material” for his disappointing performance opposite the bubbly Anne Hathaway. “In the last week, when we really started focusing on the script for the live show and did a run-through, I said to the producer, ‘I don’t know why you hired me, because you haven’t given me anything,” he remembers. And that was the time when he knew its not going to be a good show.
