I’ll Have Another Horse is 2012 Kentucky Derby Winner

A winner has been declared in the 2012 Kentucky Derby held annually at the Churchill Downs in Louisville Kentucky.

Among the twenty Kentucky Derby 2012 contender horses, I’ll Have Another horse won “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports” besting 19 others including early favorite Bodemeister who finished at second place.

Starting at post position 19, I’ll Have Another ran the 1 1-4 miles race finishing at an official time of 2:01.83 in the 2012 Kentucky Derby horse race.

I’ll Have Another was wide rounding the turn and took off after Bodemeister entering the lane. The sophomore kept motoring down the center of the track and caught the pacesetter on the wire to score his third straight graded win.

I’ll Have Another was accompanied to the 2012 Kentucky Derby starting gate by retired fan favorite Lava Man, whom O’Neill claimed and then developed into a handicap star last decade.

“He’s an amazing horse. I kept telling everybody, from the first time I met him, I knew he was the one. I knew he was good. I said in an interview, even if they allowed me to pick from the whole rest of the field, I would have stayed with him, 100 percent, no doubt about it,” I’ll Have Another‘s jockey Mario Gutierrez said.

“Unbelievable, I can’t believe it. It’s just an incredible feeling. Mario looked like Calvin Borel coming down the stretch,” Doug O’Neill, I”ll Have Another‘s trainer, said in the post-race NBC interview.

I’ll Have Another began his racing career on the synthetic tracks in California, taking his maiden debut on Hollywood Park’s Cushion Track prior to a runner-up effort in the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes over Del Mar’s Polytrack.

Sold at auction for $11,000 as a Keeneland September yearling, I’ll Have Another was then purchased by Dennis O’Neill, the trainer’s brother, for $35,000.
