Philadelphia Eagles’ Riley Cooper Apologizes For Using N-word

Riley Cooper

“I will jump that fence and fight every (N-word) here, bro.”, Riley Cooper, Philadelphia Eagles’ wide receiver said during the Kenny Chesney concert in June. This statement was caught in a video first shared by CrossingBoard.com and later shared by Deadspin which instantly found its spot on Twitter’s “trending” topics.

Cooper immediately apologized for using the language and had issued his statements on Twitter and through Eagles, “I am so ashamed and disgusted with myself. I want to apologize. I have been offensive. I have apologized to my coach, to Jeffrey Lurie (Eagles owner), to Howie Roseman and to my teammates. I owe an apology to the fans and to this community. I am so ashamed, but there are no excuses. What I did was wrong and I will accept the consequences.”

The receiver was fined an undisclosed amount by the team and awaits word from the NFL on whether it will add its own discipline. Cooper said as well that he hasn’t talked to his teammates yet, many of whom is African-American, but he intends to.

Nevertheless, Cooper’s teammates had responded to the news with great understanding. “I still trust him as a teammate. I still love Riley. I still look at him as one of my brothers”, said Cox. The most familiar player on the team, Michael Vick, has echoed the thoughts of his mates, “Riley came to us as a man. As a teammate, I forgave him.”

As for now, Cooper had moved into the team’s No. 2 receiver spot after the season-ending injury to Jeremy Maclin. This perhaps indicates that the organization considers him to still be valuable on the field.
