Glee’s Cory Monteith a Teen Druggie

Your past does not determine your future, it is what you decide to do in the present that does.

For Glee actor Cory Monteith, this could not be any truer.

Unlike his quiet, well-behaved Glee character Finn Hudson, Monteith had a serious drug problem when he was a teenager that his friends and family thought he “could die”.

If not for his loving mother and well-meaning friends, he could have very well been dead at 19 years old.

Monteith revealed that at the tender age of 13 he was already smoking pot and skipping classes. At 16, he quit school all together after attending 12 different schools.

He was quoted as saying, “I burned a lot of bridges. I was out of control. I had a serious problem (with drugs). Anything and everything as much as possible.

At 19, his mother and a couple of friends staged an intervention. He then went to his first rehab program but went back to his old ways soon after.

The actor admitted it was only later that he decided to get clean.
He said, “I stole a significant amount of money from a family member. I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn’t care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, ‘Yeah, it was me.’ It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years.”

Monteith sums up his life by saying he felt “lucky to be alive” after his troubled youth.
