Ted Danson joins CSI

Cheers star Ted Danson joins the CSI: Crime Scene Investigation cast in their 12th season opening this autumn.

Danson will be replacing Laurence Fishburne who played Ray Langston for two and a half seasons. Fishburne joined the cast as in 2008 after William Petersen, who plays Gil Grissom, decided to leave the series.

Danson’s character is reported to be more like Grissom than Langston.

Executive Producer Don McGill has this to say about Danson: “From the moment we all started talking about the role, it was clear he couldn’t be more perfect. Intelligence, wit, warmth, depth of character and emotion, he brings it all. And now he’ll have to bring latex gloves, too.”

Danson will play a graveyard shift supervisor from Portland who moves to the Las Vegas crime lab. His character will join the team as they deal with the professional and personal fall-out stemming from last season’s pursuit of a serial killer.

CSI will air in a new schedule when it resumes on September 21. The series will be shown Wednesdays at 10 p.m.

The Emmy-winner is famous for his bartender character, Sam Malone, in the comedy Cheers. He reprised his Sam Malone role in an early episode of Frasier.

He was born in 1947 in San Diego.
