Ja Rule Gets 2 Years for Tax Evasion

Not knowing the law does not mean you will not get punished if you break it – especially if the law you broke because you did not know about it has everything to do with your income taxes. Rapper Ja Rule probably knows that by heart now.

Ja Rule (Jeffrey Atkins in real life) has been sentenced by a New Jersey court to more than two years in federal prison for failing to file tax income returns. He also was ordered to pay $1.1 million in unpaid taxes.

Ja Rule tried to argue in court by saying, “I in no way attempted to deceive the government or do anything illegal…I was a young man who made a lot of money — I’m getting a little choked up — I didn’t know how to deal with these finances, and I didn’t have people to guide me, so I made mistakes.”

Last March, he pleaded guilty to failing to pay taxes on more than $3 million he earned as income.

Ja Rule was also sentenced last month to up to two years in state prison after pleading guilty to attempted criminal weapon possession. His prison sentence will be served at the same time as the latest federal tax sentence. This means depending on his release date for the gun charge, he could serve only four to 12 months for the tax evasion charges.

He is currently serving time at the Oneida Correctional Facility in upstate New York.
