Moneyball: A Great Film About America’s Greatest Pastime

When Moneyball was released this weekend, some skeptics thought that the film is just another sports movie about baseball. While it is true that the film has baseball as its backdrop, the storyline is not just your typical formula where in the loser (usually the lead star) gets another chance to redeem himself by winning the most important game of his life.

The story is about Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt), a has-been-who-never-was baseball player trying to save the 2002 Oakland A’s from being a dismal to competitive ballclub. Instead of doing it the old-fashioned way of wheeling and dealing with top free agents and prospects, Billy hires Peter Brand, a math wizard and economist. Billy and Peter work together using statistical analysis to help them choose the right players for the team.

The partnership between the manager and the analyst results to player choices overlooked by most traditional baseball teams.

Moneyball is a great film for die-hard baseball and casual sports fans. Even non-baseball fans will appreciate the film because the plot goes beyond the sport. Yes, Brad Pitt fans have another chance to see the Hollywood star in another good film.
