Leila Lopes, 2nd Black Woman to Beat Philippines at Miss Universe

Leila Lopes from Angola is indeed an early top-favorite to win the crown at Miss Universe 2011 which was held at Sao Paolo in Brazil. Lopes bested another top-favorite from the Philippines, Shamcey Supsup at the 60th anniversary of Miss Universe 2011.

Leila, who stands 1.79 m (5 ft 10.5 in) tall, formerly competed as one of 21 finalists in her country’s national beauty pageant, Miss Angola, held in Luanda last December 18, 2010.

She was hailed in Benguela, Angola on February 26, 1986, Leila is a business management student in Great Britain where she was crowned Miss Angola UK on October 8, 2010 and became the official representative of the Angolan community in the United Kingdom to the 2011 Miss Angola pageant. She also won the Miss Photogenic award that time.

Consequently, Lopes is the first Angolan to win the title in the entire history of Miss Universe. She is the fourth African and fourth black woman in the world to win the said title.

The other three African women who previously won the title were Margaret Gardiner of South Africa in 1978, Michelle Mclean of Namibia in 1992 and Mpule Kwelagobe of Botswana in 1999.

Just like what happen in Miss Universe 1999, 12 years ago in Trinidad and Tobago, the crowd favourite to win the crown that time is our very own Miriam Quiambao.

On the same year, she was bested in the final question and answer portion by Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe who eventually won the crown. Miss Philippines Miriam Quiambao settled for 1st runner up position.

Other reports are saying that the Miss Universe 2011 beauty pagean was a sort of political considering Lopes was a crowd favourite and why some of the people who are present there were sensitive when it comes to religion.

Angola is a former Portuguese colony. Most of the citizens there are well-versed in Portuguese and Lopes talked Portuguese more than once during the pageant, not just in the Question and Answer portion. That is why Lopes were loved by thousands of Brazilian who are present that night to witness the pageant.
