Former Weezer Bassist Mikey Welsh Found Dead

Former Weezer bassist Mikey Welsh was found dead on Saturday in his hotel room. The cause of death has not been disclosed although the artist-musician predicted two weeks ago on Twitter that he would die of a heart attack while sleeping.

Welsh was found lifeless in his room at the Raffaello Hotel in Chicago when local police responded to a call from hotel staff that he has not checked out of his room. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office pronounced Welsh dead at the scene, suspecting drug use as cause of death.

Welsh joined Weezer in 1998 to replace then bassist Matt Sharp and left the band in 2001 due to a nervous breakdown. He remained friends with his former band until the time of his death. Band members and fans expressed grief over social networking sites as soon as they heard the news about Welsh.

A statement read on the Weezer website, ““It saddens me and the guys in Weezer so much to say that our beautiful, creative, hilarious and sweet friend Mikey Welsh has passed away at the very young age of 40. A unique talent, a deeply loving friend and father, and a great artist is gone, but we will never forget him. His chapter in the Weezer story (’98 – ’01) was vital, essential, wild, and amazing,” his former band members said.
