Bill Parcells and Sean Payton to meet about Saints Head Coaching Issue

The two-time Super Bowl-winning coach, who currently works for ESPN, has been asked to coach the Saints by Sean Payton, the Saints skipper who has been suspended for the upcoming season over the Saints bounty program, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen exclusively reported. A recent reports already released saying that the idea of Bill Parcells becoming the New Orleans Saints interim head coach during Sean Payton’s one-year suspension apparently has some legs. According to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Payton and Parcells are meeting in Florida this week to discuss the possibility of Parcells becoming the Saints interim head coach in Payton’s absence.

“As a friend of Sean’s and a football guy, I’m sure he’d consider it but they’re talking about a lot of things,” an anonymous source told Mortensen about Parcells. “In the end, I don’t think it would happen. It makes sense but it’s complicated.”

Parcells, 70, won the Super Bowl twice with the New YorkGiants, in 1986 and 1990, and was a finalist for the Hall of Fame this year but was not elected in what some were calling a snub.

Parcells, also known as “The Big Tuna,” also coached the New England Patriots, New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys.

Payton’s agent said Monday “no decisions have been made about an appeal.”

Donald Yee says Payton “fully supports the league’s player safety goals” and that Payton “probably won’t address the entire league” Tuesday when he arrives at the NFL owners meetings.

When Parcells was asked if anyone in the Saints organization had talked to him about coaching the team in 2012, he said “No,” prior to the NewYork Mets spring training game Monday against St. Louis.

Parcells may also have his Hall of Fame candidacy affected if he took the job. He was eligible earlier this year, but didn’t get in. Returning to the NFL, however, may re-start the clock on his five-year wait.
