Eileen Brennan Dead: ‘Private Benjamin’ Actress Dies at 80



Eileen Brennan, an award-winning actress, has died at the age of 80 last Sunday, July 28, 2013, at her home in Burbank, California due to bladder cancer. She earned an Oscar’s award on 1980 as Best Supporting Actress in her film “Private Benjamin” where she played as US Army Captain.

Verlan Eileen Regina Brennan was born on September 3, 1932 in Los Angeles, California. She’s a daughter of a doctor, John Gerald Brennan, and a silent-film actress, Regina “Jeanne” Menehan. The said actress was married to David John Lampson from 1968-1974 and has two sons namely Patrick Brennan and Sam Lampson.

Brennan started acting on stage plays before going Hollywood. She was first noticed in “Little Mary Sunshine” on 1959 then became a member of the original company of “Hello, Dolly” five years later. From New York stage, she moved to the screen in “The Cheap Detective”, “The Last Picture Show”, and “The Sting”. Brennan also had guest shots on “Thirtysomething”, “Mad About You”, “Murder She Wrote”, and “The Love Boat”. She also did a reprising of her “Private Benjamin” role in the CBS TV series of the same name and gained seven Emmy nominations, one of which was from her episodes of “Will and Grace”.

Brennan was nearly killed in 1982 when she was hit by a car after having dinner with “Benjamin” co-star Goldie Hawn. Her legs were smashed, bones in her face were broken and her left eye socket was shattered. She became dependent to painkillers during her healing process and was admitted in Betty Ford Clinic to cure her addiction.

“Our family is grateful for the outpouring of love and respect for Eileen”, stated by her family. “She was funny and caring and truly one of a kind. Her strength and love will never be forgotten.”
