Lauper sang the U.S. National Anthem right before the semi-final match between Serena Williams and No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki. It sure is no fun for the pop star who popularized the 80’s hit single “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” as she called for a brief moment to remember the 9/11 tragedy.

It started out well but Lauper messed up with the lyrics just like Christina Aguilera did at the most recent Super Bowl. Lauper should have sung “O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming” but she mumbled the third line that it sounded like “O’er the ramparts we watched as our flag was still streaming.

This mistake has been the favorite subject on Twitter and other online social networks. What probably aggravated the situation was that Cyndi Lauper was wearing a short Statue of Liberty dress. Some things like tacky dressing just never change.

This news was spoiled to the media by no other than Kris Aquino.

It was announced by Kris days ago that they were actually thinking of who to choose between Charice and Pilipinas Got Talent Grand Winner Jovit Baldivino to sing the national anthem on the historic day.

Well, let us just hope that there will no issue raised on the singing of the national anthem this time around from the National Historical Institute.

Arnel, the Journey rock band frontman shared his being sorry for the disappointment his performance caused during the ABS-CBN News interview:

I apologize for my dissatisfactory performance dun sa fight ni Pacquiao and Clottey sa Dallas, Texas, according to their standards. What can I do? I’m just doing my job… but then again hindi ako sorry kasi artistic freedom ko yon. It doesn’t make me less of a Filipino dahil sa nabago ang pagkakanta.

While the NHI was bent on filing a complaint, Pineda earlier said that he leaves all matter regarding this issue on his lawyers.  But an instant change of heart prompted Arnel to reexamine what had happened.

Ano ba ang bago?  ‘Yong traditional na pagkanta ng ‘Lupang Hinirang’ ang gusto nilang marinig. On my part, I’m just doing my artistic freedom. I was there as Filipino representing Pacquiao and the Philippines. ‘Yun ang importante.

Pineda could be punished if found guilty of violating the Republic Act (RA) 8491. RA 8491 and could even face imprisonment.

Martin Nievera on the other hand defended Arnel.  It will be remembered that Martin faced a similar problem during his singing of the National Anthem on the previous Pacquiao fight in Las Vegas.

Well unang-una ginawa niya yon from the heart. Obviously binago din ang ending. For me, I see nothing wrong with that dahil hindi naman ako kasama sa NHI. For me, I think Arnel did a very good job.

Arnel Pineda Apologized to NHI, Martin Nievera Defended Him is a copyrighted article from Showbiz Renegade

The chief of the Heraldry Section of the NHI is set to file a complaint against Pineda at the Department of Justice for violating the Section 37 of Republic Act 8491 or the Flag and Heraldic Code which is all about the proper singing of the national anthem; he sang it too slow and with high pitch at the end.  Anyone who violated and found guilty by the court will be fined from P5,000 – P20,000 or will be jailed for a one year. Arnel Pineda was interviewed days before the fight and said that he will sing and be faithful to what is being stated by the law in order not to follow with previous incidents that involved similar problems during Pacquiao’s fights.  Asked about the latest issue he is involved with, he said that he just sang from the heart, and the spontaneous outpour of emotion and pride cannot simply be dampened while singing the national anthem in front of millions of viewers.  He will leave the issue to his lawyer.

Until now though, there is no one who got punished under this law.

The Renegade Blogger’s View:  This is not something new of an issue.  For me, I think there should also be some room for personal expression and art in the way of the singing of national anthem without really disrespecting it.  As what the Heraldry Section of the NHI said, if people do not want to follow it or needs an updating in consideration of the present needs, sentiments and consciousness, then ratify the law.  Singing the national anthem should not be always as stiff as like fighting in a bloody war which is the very context when the national anthem was composed by Julian Felipe.  Well, so far no one got punished.

Pinoy frontman of the rock band “Journey” Arnel Pineda was the one commissioned by Pacquiao’s camp to sing the National Anthem during his fight at the Cowboy’s Stadium in Texas.

Pupunta ako sa Dallas to sing sa laban ni Manny [Pacquiao]. This Thursday [ang alis ko]. I’m really happy kasi matutuloy na. Nahihiya na ako kay Manny kasi pangatlong invitation na ito sa akin. Baka kasi isipin ay iniisnab ko. So finally, matutuloy na.

Hope this time around no more issue will be raised against the singing of the National Anthem as what had previously happened with La Diva and others.
